Legacies are important! William Burda, MBA, LHRM
Think of all the promises that are made by those that run for office. How many of those promises come to fruition? It is true, most politicians tell you what you want to hear and then, upon getting elected, their promises and representations become defunct. Voters must educate themselves on applicable issues and must ask the tough and probing questions for all candidates pursuing public office. I look to my public officials to prove themselves. For instance, if questions are asked of a Commissioner or Council Person, how often do they respond themselves versus someone in their office? I don't have much respect for an elected official who delegates my issues to someone else. My issue with this “pass-it-on” process is as follows: How are you supposed to understand the issue, if you personally don't address the questions? Issues are not always isolated and often contribute to other areas of interest. If you are elected to oversee a defined district or location, then address the issue and do your job! An elected official should always address the questions and thus, better define the issues and their respective solutions/responses. Isn't that their job, as an elected official? Legacies are important when interpreting the merits of an elected official. I look at all the elected officials who seek further election and ask myself, what is their legacy? I often cannot recollect any particular issue or event that qualifies as a reputable legacy, for most officials I ponder. Legacies define a person’s success or failures. In public office, I should hope one’s legacy is based on validated decisions, fiscal responsibilities, and representations that promote constituent interests, needs, and appreciation. Legacies are important! Require your elected officials to work on your behalf and address your issues as they arise. These officials are your public representatives and are obligated to listen to you and address your issues. You may not like the answer, but an answer you should receive. Ask for details and distinctions in order to understand the rationale of one's decision. When it comes time to vote, be comfortable with your candidate’s philosophies and be confident that they will represent your agendas and not their own! Hold your elected officials accountable for their decisions, actions, representations, and community contributions. If you demand more, of your public officials, you can build legacies about performance, caring and trust. Legacies are important!
